On Saturday, Nov. 9, OPAL Management Partner Timothy Lock made the scenic drive to the Chewonki, in Wiscasset. It’s a well-worn path for Tim, who is managing an extensive portfolio of projects that will renew the campus of that venerable, vibrant outdoor education institution. And this sunny late-autumn day marked a significant step toward that goal: the dedication of a residential duplex that will serve as the model for a new generation of Chewonki staff housing.
Named for longtime Chewonki faculty members Sue West and Scott Andrews, and reflecting an updated summer camp aesthetic, the two residences are designed to reach the stringent Passive House standard of energy efficiency and indoor air quality.
At a brief ceremony, Chewonki President Willard Morgan recounted the history of the project, which will serve as a flexible template to be deployed in future staff-housing structures across the campus’s varied terrain. Before leading a tour of the building, Tim spoke about the close philosophical alignment between Chewonki and OPAL, which share a deep commitment to the landscapes and ecology of coastal Maine.
This sense of common purpose is one of our greatest assets in helping Chewonki prepare for its next 100 years, and we look forward eagerly to continuing the work.
