We are thrilled to announce the selection of the College of the Atlantic’s Davis Center for Human Ecology as a recipient of an AIA Maine Honor Award for excellence in architecture. We are proud of this collaboration with Susan T Rodriguez Architecture to produce an academic building on the leading edge of building ecology. This approach radically reduces the lifecycle carbon footprint and effectively neutralizes the environmental impact of its construction, while enhancing program and reinforcing local habitat and setting a benchmark for future-oriented educational buildings.
Sited between Frenchman’s Bay and Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island, the Davis Center weaves together the interdisciplinary study of Human Ecology with environmental sustainability. Inspired by the unique character and culture of COA’s oceanfront campus, the design reinforces an immersive learning experience on the Maine coast.
From the Jury:
“Thoughtfully designed spaces honor the program, the site, and the need for creative thinking and sustainable design.”
