Commissioned by an environmentally focused liberal arts college, this dormitory is a flexible, scalable model for attracting a larger percentage of students to live on campus. Maintaining the institution’s tradition of small-group, communal housing, the building comprises a trio of three-story wings, each supporting a semi-independent community of 24 students. A single-story circulation hub at the core contains three kitchen-and-dining spaces, separated by movable partitions, that can be combined for larger events.
The building’s pinwheel shape creates a variety of sheltered outdoor gathering places—including a central roof deck—and fosters engagement between the interior spaces and the picturesquely wooded campus. The modular design, optimized for mass timber and cross laminated timber (CLT) construction, is adaptable to a wide range of site conditions and solar orientations, facilitates prefabrication and phased construction, and delivers carbon-positive lifecycle energy performance.
