Sheldon Calvary Camp
Unlike a the compact residential cube one might imagine when thinking of a typical passivhaus, the newly designed dining hall at Sheldon Calvary Camp (SCC) is an expansive 9000 sq ft building in Conneaut, Ohio that will include conference facilities and great views of Lake Erie. SCC is working with GO Logic to innovate form and efficiency in a design that will serve as a hub for the cooking and dining needs of campers and visitors. For generations, faith-based outdoor recreation for youth and families has been the focus of the historic Sheldon Calvary Camp. Community, caring, and love are foundational to the mission of the SCC. As Reverend Leslie G. Reimer says joyfully, “We don’t preach it, but we live it.” Operating in the same location on the shore of Lake Erie since 1936, SCC wants to maintain the character and tradition of communal dining generations of campers have enjoyed, but also expand the use of the camp to allow for conferences, weddings, or other events to be held throughout the year. The current dining hall is, essentially, a long unheated, uninsulated screened-in porch, usable only during summer months. The new building will have the same open feel, but maintain comfortable temperatures throughout the entire year. Referencing the current dining hall’s whitewashed siding and dormer windows, the design also takes cues from camp’s well-loved chapel, with panels of log siding and an exaggerated A-frame shape.
