Fine Homebuilding is unique among shelter magazines. As its name implies, it’s a trade publication, geared for people who design and build houses. The magazine’s contributors include architects and builders as well as professional writers, and its content is pitched for professionals who want to pick up practical skills and tips rather than simply admire beautiful houses. How-to stories clipped from Fine Homebuilding are often passed around on job sites and at construction staff meetings.
Yet the magazine also has a strong following among the general public. Its project stories often represent the perspectives of the owners along with those of the architect and builder. Its design aesthetic embraces both the rigorous modernism one sees in high-brow architecture publications and highly crafted traditional designs, and its technical pieces are accessible to lay people, weekend warriors, and pros alike. The annual “Houses” issue is a perfect example. This year’s edition includes articles on site-built wood panel doors and incorporating masonry chimney’s in airtight houses as well as on the magazine’s 2018 design awards.
All of the above makes it a particular honor that Fine Homebuilding named GO Logic’s Wellesley Residence its Best New Home of 2018. We are very proud of this project, a suburban infill residence that brings a fresh design approach—and Passive House energy efficiency—to a familiar setting and program. We’re also pleased with writer Rob Wotzak’s story, which describes not just the building’s features and performance, but also the process by which we transformed the elements of an overused formula to achieve a result that is both strikingly new and contextually appropriate.
Thanks, Fine Homebuilding, for the recognition and the thoughtful coverage.
